Michael Jackson, The King of Pop, was a musical icon. He had it all. Fame, fortune and beauty were just a few of the things he possessed. He was also an extraordinary entertainer. But above all else, Michael Jackson was an inspiration. With nine number one singles and six number one albums under his belt, he has not only changed the face of music for generations, but also opened the door to the world of entertainment and fashion.

Early Life

Michael Joseph Jackson was born on August 29, 1958. He was the only child of Joseph and Katherine Jackson. His family moved to Gary, Indiana in 1959 where he lived until 1961 when the family moved to a neighborhood in the Chicago suburb of Encino, California. At age nine, Michael entered the Joseph Lewis School, an elementary school where he was a choir boy and a member of the Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps. 

He attended high school at the John Marshall High School, where he excelled as a student. At age 13, Michael Jackson went to a church in Los Angeles where he was influenced by a preacher named the Reverend James Joseph Smith. Smith was known as the "Revivalist," and was a well-known Pentecostal minister who preached about the power of God. In 1972, when he was 14 years old, he met the Rev. J.L. Jackson who later became his manager and a close friend.

Moreover, the first musical experience that Michael had come at age 14. He saw the band Chicago performing in a local club, and he later asked the lead singer, Peter Cetera, to teach him how to sing. 

At age 14, he began to play the guitar, harmonica, and piano. He formed his first band, The Jackson 5, with brothers Jackie, Tito, and Jermaine. The band was signed to Epic Records and released its debut album in 1969, entitled The Jackson 5.

Career

Michael Jackson has had a long and successful career in music. He has sold over 400 million records worldwide. He has had several number one albums in the US Billboard charts.

They believed that his dreams wouldn't materialise unless he got good grades in school. This didn't seem to bother him though. 

Michael Jackson started out doing commercial jingles for radio stations when he was a teenager. At the age of 12, Michael Jackson signed a record deal with CBS Records, and in 1971, he released his first album, Love You Because. By the end of the 1980s, he had released six albums, and by the end of the 1990s, he had sold over 200 million copies of his albums worldwide.
