Early Years

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band was formed in 1965 by Jeff Hanna and his friends. At the time, Jeff was a teenager living in Northern California. He had just graduated from high school. Jeff’s friend, John McEuen, was a musician. John also lived in Northern California. He had been in a band called The Roadrunners. John was the lead singer and guitarist for The Roadrunners. Jeff was the drummer. The band mainly played cover songs.

Jeff and John began writing their songs about life in Northern California. They wrote songs about the environment. Furthermore, they wrote songs about love, hope, and friendship.

Jeff and John began performing songs at local coffee houses. By 1967, the band had grown in popularity. They had performed at more than 30 coffee houses. But the band was still small.

A New Direction

In 1968, Jeff and John decided to change direction. They wanted to write songs that would be unique. They wanted to write songs that would be meaningful and connect with people.

Jeff and John decided to form a band that would focus on original songs. They thought about the title, The New Christy Minstrels. Jeff and John knew the name didn’t fit their vision. So they decided to change the name.

The name that they chose was Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Nitty Gritty Dirt Band meant different things to different people. For some people, it meant a good time. For others, it meant fun. Albums

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band released its first album in 1969. The album was called “Will the Circle Be Unbroken.” The album included four songs written by Jeff Hanna and three songs written by John McEuen. They recorded the album at a studio in San Francisco. Joe Marnell produced the album. Joe was a famous record producer at the time.

In addition to producing the album, Joe served as the band’s manager. Joe helped the band get signed with a major record label.
