Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's post-Woodstock fame was capped off with Deja Vu, recorded '69 and released in '70, launching a tour mired in conflict which led to the quartet's split. Deja Vu's illusionary quality, with Young on only five of its ten tracks, left listeners empty-handed for a tangible legacy. 4 Way Street, released '71, was a live double-LP featuring superb music distilled from their tour, encapsulating their unique ethos. All four participants showcased their best work, while shared repertory like "Long Time Gone" and "Ohio" bound it all together. As with the group, the music was diffuse, yet 4 Way Street remains one of the great live rock documents. Extended guitar jams between Stills and Young captivated listeners, while Nash and Crosby showed "less can be more". This was their greatest legacy, though it can't be held up to Deja Vu, as 4 Way.
