Before releasing Awakening in 1980, Hiroshi Sato was a well-respected keyboardist and session player in Tokyo. He declined an invitation to join Yellow Magic Orchestra and focused on creating his masterpiece, enlisting the help of notable musicians Tatsuro Yamashita, Yuji Toriyama, and Tsunehide Matsuki. The album, featuring sophisticated synths, vocoders, and slinky jazz-funk, is a city-pop gem with beautiful and emotional melodies.
