After releasing Life Is Sweet! Nice to Meet You in 2010, a throat operation forced Devonte Hynes to change his singing style to a falsetto. As Blood Orange, he now has a smoother vocal approach, blending chillwave, R&B, and '80s new wave. Inspired by the N.Y.C. transvestites in the documentary Paris Is Burning, Coastal Grooves is Hynes' first album where he feels comfortable being unique. The lyrics, woven with Lou Reed-esque stories and Hynes' own experiences in Brooklyn, create a sentimental yet seedy atmosphere. The album's black-and-white artwork captures this mood perfectly, making for a fashionably slick, tragic, and beautiful album.
