The Black Keys' Delta Kream offers a spacious, yet never trippy sound. Rather than lively juke-joint blues, the band explores textures and luxuriates in grooves, reminiscent of their 2014 album Turn Blue. Their interpretation of John Lee Hooker's "Crawling Kingsnake" takes a slow approach, perhaps losing some of the original's bite. While it may not deliver the same visceral thrill, Delta Kream's expansive jams touch upon the modal drone found in Kimbrough's vamps. The band's take on this Mississippi blues creates a supple and comforting tone, even during the occasional boogie moments.
Delta Kream, the newest addition to the Black Keys' discography, presents a more subdued sound in contrast to the aggressively cheerful "Let's Rock". However, this is precisely what makes it appealing - a record created in just two days by a band who have become the grizzled veterans they once admired. Rather than a regression to their early days, Delta Kream serves as a milestone on their musical journey. Through delving into the blues that runs deep in their souls, the Black Keys showcase the incredible progress they have made in the past 20 years.
