Description
Ryuichi Sakamoto and David Toop's collaboration, Garden of Shadows and Light, was featured at a concert in London in 2018. The duo's diverse experience, together and apart, from session work to film scores, sparked curiosity about how they would approach their first concert. The opening of inside-piano and lap steel guitar revealed a soft, hushed free improvisation with space, pauses, and silence taking on significance. The album's title is based on Japanese gardening, symbolizing a journey through a shifting, beautiful environment. Evolving percussive, electronic, and recorder tones shape the course of the non-teleological music with Sakamoto and Toop allowing each moment its own space.
