Recorded in '63 with Elvin Jones and Jimmy Garrison at the helm, this session introduces Sonny Simmons (alto & English horn) and Prince Lasha (flute & clarinet). Barkley Davis and McCoy Tyner join the sextet, each contributing an original, and the tunes range from hard bop to more adventurous new sounds. While Garrison's tunes are predictable, Elvin Jones is fierce. Yet it's Simmons and Lasha (when will he be back in the studio?) that make this a defining "New Thing" record.
