The CTI recordings by acclaimed trumpeter Freddie Hubbard have often been overlooked and overshadowed by his more commercial work for Columbia. This LP showcases Hubbard's immense talent through four of his original compositions, including the standout "Spirits of Trane". Backed by a septet featuring talented musicians such as tenor-saxophonist Junior Cook, keyboardist George Cables, and guitarist Aurell Ray, with either Kent Brinkley or Ron Carter on bass, drummer Ralph Penland, and percussionist Juno Lewis, the music is a unique blend of funky and creative jazz, showcasing Hubbard at the height of his career.
