The Three Sounds (pianist Gene Harris, bassist Andy Simpkins and drummer Bill Dowdy) were quite popular in the early to mid-1960s and recorded many albums, but surprisingly few have been reissued. This Mercury LP finds the trio mostly sticking to bluesy material, plus a couple of Oscar Peterson tunes ("Blues for Big Scotia" and the joyous "Hymn to Freedom"). Whether it be "Glory of Love," "Willow Weep for Me" or even "Mississippi Mud," every song sounds a bit like the blues on this hard-to-find set.
