The depth of blues on Miles Davis' only album with his original sextet is evident. "Milestones," introducing modalism to jazz, is its only modal selection. The rest are varying blues tunes, including "Dr. Jackle" with Davis' muscular trumpet tone, and "Sid's Ahead" and "Two Bass Hit," with saxophone choruses and piano solos. Monk's "Straight, No Chaser" closes the album, becoming a signature tune for the sextet going forward.
