Following his tenure with the prominent John Coltrane Quartet, Elvin Jones, renowned drummer, signed on with Blue Note Records in 1968 and released a series of 10 exceptional albums, including Mr. Jones, produced by Francis Wolff and George Butler. This masterpiece features an incredible lineup consisting of saxophonists Dave Liebman and Steve Grossman, along with Pepper Adams, Thad Jones on flugelhorn, piano virtuoso Jan Hammer, Gene Perla on bass, and percussionists Carlos “Patato” Valdes, Frank Ippolito, and Albert Duffy. This collection of post-bop tracks, deeply influenced by Latin sounds, also showcases a soulful rendition of Tadd Dameron’s beloved ballad, “Soultrane”, as a tribute to Coltrane.
