An homage to Yoko Ono, hand-picked by Ben Gibbard of Death Cab For Cutie. Featuring several renowned artists like Sharon Van Etten, David Byrne, Yo La Tengo, Stephin Merritt, The Flaming Lips, and Japanese Breakfast.
Some of the included covers serve to make Ono's highly eccentric, almost outsider songs more accessible. In some cases, this means highlighting the crowd-pleasing beauty that lurks just beneath the surface, as demonstrated by Jay Som's ethereal dream-pop adaptation of Growing Pain. Other covers smooth out some of the inherent weirdness: Byrne and Yo La Tengo's resounding, barbershop-style rendition of Who Has Seen the Wind is less jarring than the original's hauntingly childlike vocals and Elizabethan-style instrumentation. The only exception is the Flaming Lips, who manage to make Ono even stranger with added trippiness in their version of Mrs Lennon.
