Capitol Records had difficulties releasing a live album by the Beatles in 1964. Despite recording their August 23 concert at the Hollywood Bowl, the results were not acceptable. In 1965, they attempted another recording of the August 29 and 30 concerts, but the crowd's screams made it hard to hear the band. The tapes were finally released in 1977 when Capitol president Bhaskar Menon asked George Martin to create a live album from the two recordings. This was done to combat bootleg and unofficial live Beatles albums. The 13-track LP received positive feedback but was also deemed disappointing due to the overwhelming screams.
