The Festival Album was the Crusaders' only live set not recorded at the Lighthouse. It includes performances from '66 at Pacific Jazz and Newport Festivals, with Jimmy Bond and Herbie Lewis on bass. The band had a dozen records, all popular. "Trance Dance" opens the set, showcasing the band's hard bop and blues. Sample, Henderson, and Felder all solo. The groove on trio piece "Summer's Madness" is their sound signature. Sample's "Freedom Sound" displays great lyricism.
