Boasting a career as a major tenor jazzman spanning over 35 years, Hawkins had always been hesitant to delve into blues. However, the opener of this album, the extended "Bird of Prey Blues", demonstrated clearly that he had at last conquered this genre. His emotionally charged improvisations, although more intricate than typical R&B solos, still retained their vigor and flair. This stellar quintet session, featuring Buck Clayton on trumpet and Hank Jones on piano, was propelled even higher by Hawkins' playing, making it an exemplary record.
