As an experienced member of the punk rock scene, Poly Styrene emerged as a unique and influential voice as the frontwoman of X-Ray Spex. Her bold presence and relentless critiques of consumerism, sexism, and racism as a biracial youth in Britain gave her music a passionate and purposeful edge. However, with the onset of a new era in the 1980s, the punk movement was coming to an end, and Poly Styrene was witnessing a rebirth.

In 1979, halfway through the rise of the post-punk movement, Poly parted with X-Ray Spex and promptly released her debut solo effort, Translucence. With a noticeable shift towards a softer sound, the album prominently incorporates jazz and easy listening elements. The standout feature of the record is Styrene's stunning and ethereal vocals, which are showcased in the enchanting first track, 'Dreaming'.

Translucence incorporates elements from jazz, reggae, and dub, offering a more melodic sound compared to her previous work. The album may seem slightly fragmented, almost resembling a compilation of tracks that she was unable to use with the Spex. It seamlessly transitions from relaxed, reggae-style jazz to electronic music influenced by Mark Ayers, all while maintaining a tranquil and spiritual atmosphere.
